The Internet is Making You Insane – Here’s Why You Love It

Welcome to the Digital Asylum

Internet insanity. Every time you open your phone, you willingly step into an endless carnival of chaos. Doomscrolling, rage bait, parasocial drama, hyper-niche subcultures, and algorithmically generated rabbit holes—this is the digital landscape you can’t escape.

But here’s the thing: You love it.

Not in a wholesome, “I love my online friends” kind of way, but in the same way people slow down to gawk at a car crash. The internet is rotting your brain, warping your emotions, and shortening your attention span—yet you keep coming back for more.

The Dopamine Death Spiral

Social media, news cycles, and content feeds are engineered to be addictive. Every like, retweet, and comment injects a hit of dopamine straight into your system, rewarding you for engagement and ensuring you never log off.

  • Outrage Farming: The angrier you are, the more you interact. Platforms love this. That’s why your timeline is filled with absurdly inflammatory takes that send you into a typing frenzy.
  • The Infinity Scroll Trap: Your brain isn’t meant to process infinite stimulation. But TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram feed you an endless supply of nonsense that makes real life feel boring by comparison.
  • The Echo Chamber Effect: You think you’re making independent choices, but in reality, your worldview is being shaped by a carefully curated selection of information designed to confirm your biases.

Why You Can’t Look Away

There’s a twisted pleasure in watching the chaos unfold. The digital world moves at such an absurd pace that missing a single day online feels like stepping into an alternate timeline. It’s why people become chronically online, hyper-invested in internet beef, and obsessed with content creators they’ll never meet.

  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): If you log off, the discourse moves on without you. Who was canceled today? What meme is blowing up? You have to stay updated.
  • The “Main Character” Syndrome: Everyone wants to go viral, be the center of attention, or at least contribute to the discourse. Online, you can reinvent yourself endlessly, curate your persona, and live a more interesting life than reality allows.
  • Escapism Disguised as Engagement: The more time you spend online, the more you lose touch with reality. But the alternative—facing the monotony of everyday life—is too unbearable. So, you keep scrolling.

How to Break Free (But You Won’t)

Technically, there’s a way out. You could delete social media, touch grass, read a book, and start living in the real world. But let’s be honest—you’re not going to.

The internet is too entertaining, too engaging, and too deeply woven into your daily existence. So instead, you’ll keep clicking, keep scrolling, and keep feeding the very system that’s making you lose your mind. And deep down, you wouldn’t have it any other way.
